The Nature Explore Classroom at
Chadron State College Child Development Center

2nd Year Certification

Chadron State College in Chadron, NE is celebrating their 3rd year as a certified Nature Explore Classroom.

The Chadron State College Child Development Center main staff held Advisory Board meetings monthly throughout the year to brainstorm ideas for how to update the Nature Explore Outdoor Learning Environment with new features and create opportunities for family and community participation.

A special effort was made to involve local horticulturalists and students.  A student teacher assistant was hired as caretaker for the outdoor play space from April into the fall. Workdays were also held to involve parents and community partners in planting and updating projects.

An additional garden area has been added this year which allows children to plant, care and harvest an array of fruits and vegetables.  Lilac bushes and a variety of trees have been planted throughout the classroom to add beauty to the space while providing shade. A wooden pergola was installed over the building area to provide needed shade and interest.  A new wishing well was added also.

This year, staff professional development included Project Wild, Project Learning Tree and
Discovering Nature.
