The Nature Explore Classroom at
Kellom Elementary School
Teachers at Kellom Elementary encourage students to be active participants in their Nature Explore Classroom.
Children eagerly maintain the play area and gardens by pulling weeds, watering plants and adding mulch when needed. Natural items and other accumulated debris are removed through weekly cleanings of the outdoor space.
As new students enter into the program in August, they are taught procedures and guidelines for appropriately interacting in an Outdoor Classroom. The space is used throughout the year for outdoor centers, music and story time and special events. Family Fun Days are planned for each fall and spring which engages students and families in nature activities and opportunities to explore the space.
A wonderful, heartwarming story of a student who showed great excitement in exploring butterfly cocoons in the garden was shared with Dimensions Educational Research Foundation and will be included in their upcoming new book, Growing With Nature.
