California’s Abundant Conifer Resources

Pines, native to the Northern Hemisphere, flourish in California. The state is home to the highest number of cone-bearing trees, among them the most brilliant species in equally inspiring surroundings. And Plumas National Forest in northern California is a site where this evergreen family’s members thrive.

Cedars, spruces, firs, Douglas-firs, and pines often coexist with their relative, the cypress family. Junipers, cypresses, redcedar, and incense-cedar are also scattered among the pine-cypress forest’s ranges. The versatile pine can adapt to a wide range of climates, which has resulted in as many as 125 species, according to some resources.

But, although they live everywhere from the arid desert to the humid rain forest, they cannot survive fire. And, on July 5, 2007, fire struck in Plumas National Forest.
